pits &perverts concert for LGSM comes to mind- kind of punk, v political, controversial at the time

POINTS I CAN DISCUSS:
performative vs actual action

HOW IS IT RELEVANT TO ME & MY PRACTICE:
i am a politically active person and queer history, life and nightlife has impacted my work quite a lot. it is not something that i consciously put into my work but i always seem to find that the same themes pop up quite frequently. i would also like to see how understanding and looking more in one specific area of queer history will impact my work in the future.
THINGS TO LOOK IN2:
☆what this event has impacted in concerts etc after & how it affected people that went
☆similar concerts/ happenings/ art works that i might be able to compare & critique
☆ the impact of COVID on future events like this (?)
☆ how does a physical event compare to a sonic event?
SOUND ARTS 2021
FEEDBACK
the concept of my group is to make this anime opening in VR.
my role is to make the sounds and the music for the piece- we want the music to sound eerie and ghost-y
this was my first attempt at making some music for the project, i started in logic and decided to use a synthesizer for the main part and a bass synth for the bass line
MUSIC
I showed this to my group and they wanted the bass to be less electronic sounding but the general vibe of the piece was good for the project
for the second version of the piece I wanted to add more depth to the track- I started by putting two more tracks of the melody and put them both at different L/R levels, I have also started to try and figure out where I want to take the piece next.
because the main theme is quite upbeat and makes you anticipate action I wanted to try and incorporate this into the piece
my group have also been sending me some visuals so that I can get a better idea on how the music will fit with the whole project

TEXT REFLECTION
MUSIC II
after trying to further progress with the piece, I found it difficult to continue with the new part that I had started. I do not usually make compositions so I think that my understanding and ability to accomplish what I had in mind was not very strong so I thought it would be good for me to go in a different direction
I was a lot more confident with the direction that I took the second half of the piece in. at first the piece was slower than it is now but after I had left the piece for a bit and listened back to it I thought that it would be too slow for the other pieces so I decided to raise the tempo
since this piece will be existing in a third dimension I wanted to cry and create depth by layering instruments and adding panning. I started by automating some of the longer and more present tracks like the bass lines so that they will become more interesting for the listener. in tracks where I had layered the original melodies of the piece I did a set pan so that the whole piece was not constantly changing output directions.
I started off by looking at the different software instruments that logic had and playing around with a few of the synthesisers and arpeggiators and found some that I quite liked.
I used the x arpeggiator to create the bass line, I liked the way that it sounded and since my group had requested something spooky and ghosty I thought that it fit quite well
after adding the melody I wanted to make more of an atmosphere of eerie-ness. I thought about creating some more tracks with a clashing tune to add above the original one that I had made; however I found that it made the piece quite unpleasant, I personally find that I get taken out of the piece of media I am consuming if the music is too unlikable and I did not want the audience to not become immersed in the piece so I took it off. I ended up using some weird little synths to add some more layers and parts to listen to.
PRE-CRIT OVERVIEW
as I mentioned before, I was not too confident in the piece that I ended up making. I think that I held myself back from working on it a lot because I didn't enjoy working on it when I was not liking what I was making. I decided that it would be best for me to restart parts of it three or four times which cut into my time a lot as well so I wish I could have spent some more time on the final part that I was making.
I also felt quite overwhelmed with the work that I had since I was not able to successfully contact the other soundie in my group and I had to be elsewhere outside of working on the project. I also wish that I had shared more with my group as the project progressed, I did not show them parts as I was working on them but just parts that I had completed and liked; it would have been a lot more beneficial for me and the group since we are collaborating.
